Airstream

Ecommerce meets travel editorial

Airstream ecommerce: Welcome

Brief

Airstream is an American brand, recognised by the distinctive shape of their rounded and polished aluminum travel trailers. The Airstream team wanted to create an editorial focused site that will serve as an E-commerce experience. The goal was to encourage their users to purchase items or share content.
From a tech point of view the website was to be fully scalable and adjustable with a use of predefined components and layouts, allowing for new articles and products introduced weekly.

Airstream sitemap architecture

Site Architecture

The sitemap was one of the first steps in building this new website. We used it as project roadmap to align on which types of pages needed to be designed and build.

My Role

I was the sole UX designer at the start of this project. My responsibilities included conducting market research, developing the site architecture and user flows, creating the initial components and interaction design, wireframes and a fully clickable prototype.

Once the all deliverables were complete, Alex Sanders, a UI designer joined our remote team, working on developing the final designs based on Airstreams brand guidelines.

User flow

Whilst the site architecture helped us decide on the pages required for the website, the user flow helped me communicate the website's navigation.

I created a fully clickable prototype of the wireframes based on this flow to further communicate with the developers.

What I did

I started by conducting competitor and market research, focusing on high end travel, lifestyle and outdoors fashion brands. I was particularly interested in how they present their products to users, creating engaging content that is both innovative yet user friendly.

Based on my research and site map I designed pages layouts (wireframes), exploring different variations of components that could be used across multiple page types. Some of these components also included interaction elements such as hover or clicking (for mobile) for further product information.

Working closely with my distributed team we slowly narrowed down the components we liked and I iterated the wireframes. Once finalised I created a prototype which helped our developers and UI designer understand the site structure and the micro interactions.
